Abbotts Lagoon: an ice bath for your feet

Hurting cowgirls need to to make their days off from running count.    Miles of the turbulent ice bath known as the Pacific Ocean provide ample options for Bay Area residents but Abbotts Lagoon at Point Reyes National Seashore is a particularly dreamy spot.  The ever present California crowds, intimidated by the hour and half journey to San Francisco, never seem to make it this far North, leaving the vast tranquil beach for those of us willing to go the extra mile.  For extra fun, take a friend.  (That’s my niece, Lydia.)

It’s a short mile and a half trek over the bridge and through the lagoon with its resident and neighboring water birds (we saw white pelicans!).  Once the soft undulations of the dunes begin, take off your shoes and wiggle your toes in the warm sand before plunging forth into the frothy and delicious icy cold waters.  Now that’s refreshing!   There are no signs posted warning of sneaker waves, the pesky devils that carry unsuspecting tourists out to sea at McClure’s Beach further up, but best check with the Nature Center at Bear Valley for the daily conditions.
